Message from your President

2020 PRSA Palm Beach President

How are you?

What an extraordinary time.

We've learned a great deal. The world around us has changed dramatically, and we can anticipate more changes. But despite all the uncertainty, we can be confident that our profession and our expertise will be needed more than ever.

The meteoric increase in video conferencing, podcasting and other technology has adjusted our ability to connect with the other 7.8 billion people in the world. And our skills and counsel are needed to make those connections effective and appropriate.

As professionals, we are learning how to use technology better, how to reach audiences that are not going where or how they used to go, and how to anticipate and reassure audiences of their safety without talking about safety.

As human beings, we are rediscovering the joy and value of home, family, and friends. We are finding gratitude in the health and wellbeing of our loved ones and communities. We are remembering how much we enjoy staying close to home, reading, writing, gardening, or cooking.

While huddled together at home, broadcast news gave us an intimate view of a tragedy. And the growing movement to address racial inequality and police brutality, fueled by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, erupted in widespread protests across the country and our county. We struggle to understand and long to stand together, even when we must stay apart.

There is so much more we need to learn.

Next, our chapter hosts PRSA's 2018 Gold Anvil recipient Del Galloway, APR, Fellow PRSA, leading a panel discussion of respected, trusted advisors sharing their journey from public relations novice – with a desire to become a strategic counselor – to trusted advisor. Through personal stories and over a century of collective experience, the group – all who have held national leadership roles with PRSA – will explore the attributes of a trusted advisor, as well as discuss multiple factors that move a professional into a sphere of significant leadership and influence. More details coming soon!

Del is also PRSA's 2020 International Conference Chair this year and will provide details to whet interest and appetites. This will be PRSA's first-ever entirely virtual conference. We were to convene in Nashville on October 25-27, but now we'll experience the conference virtually – spread over four days the week of October 26.

Until we connect again, stay safe and be well. We must limit our exposure to others, wear our masks, wash our hands often, practice social distancing, and pay strict attention to all guidelines. Whether you are running a business, working on the front lines with customers, or patronizing a store, embrace personal responsibility by taking appropriate measures to help us overcome this pandemic. Now is the time to double our efforts to stop the spread of this virus in our county. Encourage everyone to do the same.

My best regards,
